The Birmingham Evening Mail Two and Two Make Sex The Grange Players THIS clever comedy by Richard Harris and Leslie Darbon adds up to a lot of fun on a split stage with the action sparking bursts of side-splitting laughter. Middle-aged George Williams attempts to solve a virility crisis in the arms of young Jane Bowers, but his keep-fit efforts - jogging and tugging at a chest expander - soon alert his wife. Graham Smith is a hoot as the bowler-hatted George, nervously ringing home from his lover’s bedsit to explain his late return from work, and there is a lovely performance from Lynne Young, the suspicious wife, Clare, who decides to tackle the problem by engaging in a spot of extra-marital mischief of her own. But her target turns out to be Jane’s boyfriend, Nick, and Dexter Whitehead is a bundle of energy in that role, even managing an impressive headstand while delivering some of his lines. Tessa McKnight (Jane), Rosemary Manjunath (Ruth, the agony aunt) and Robert Onions (Jane’s estranged father, Jack) complete a fine cast who are all involved in the hilarious finale. The play, directed by David Stone and produced by Martin Groves, benefits from an impressive set, representing Jane’s bedsit and the Williams’ drawing room. It runs to Saturday September 22nd.Verdict : **** Paul Marston |
