From The Birmingham Evening Mail HUMBLE BOY The Grange Players, Grange Playhouse, Walsall
THERE is one genuine star in this clever play by Charlotte Jones, not to be found on the cast list. Representing a country garden in the Cotswolds, the set is a beautifully constructed delight, with a riot of colourful flowers, an apple-bearing tree, hedges and a sweeping lawn. That provides the ideal staging for the story of family revelations when 35-year-old Felix Humble, a Cambridge astro-physicist, returns home following the death of his father. Adrian Venables is excellent as the rather feeble Felix who discovers his dominating mother Flora (Lynne Harkcom) has been having an affair with his former girlfriend's cursing dad. Graham Smith is a hoot in the role of George Pye, anxious to marry the widow, while Mary Whitehouse (Mercy Lott) has the audience in stitches when she accidentally spices up the soup with a dash of ashes from the deceased. Jessica Bennett (Rosie Pye) and Maurice Tildesley (Jim) complete the cast of this comedy directed by Bert Nicklin. It runs to Saturday March 18.
Verdict: *** PAUL MARSTON
